A “Strong” Black Woman

Many define you this way because you stand tall, Taking no shit, Just “Dealing" with everything thrown at you. Wow hearing that word makes me think of the first time i was told to be “Strong"…

I was about 6 years old and had just been in an unforgettable even life changing incident. At the time being told to be a strong little girl seemed like a mission for a golden sticker or reward of some sort.

Although now well it’s more of an insult as now speaking as a 29 year old black woman that’s all that the seeing eye perceives me to be. If you cry “your strong don’t cry”.. If you worry “Your Strong don’t worry" and the rest…

To be perceived as “Strong” can mean a variation of things to someone BUT once your skin colour is added to that perception comes the unbeknown pressure of the messenger’s words to uphold this title…..
